Credit Will Boost Commonwealth’s Creative Economy

BOSTON
– Friday, July 20, 2007 – Governor Deval Patrick, joined by legislative leaders and supporters, today signed a bill to expand the film tax credit law, making Massachusetts a more attractive location to film makers and boosting the Commonwealth’s creative economy. “The creative economy is extremely mobile and we can’t stand still in the face of stiff challenges from other states. Meeting the growing needs of this industry is important to keeping our edge and offering our strengths to the film industry.” Governor Deval Patrick said. “This new film tax law makes us more competitive, and it’s another smart step toward a stronger, healthier economy.”

NEW BEDFORD
- The following story is difficult to categorize. Corruption is too harsh and political indifference is not quite right either. The story involves dead trees, sidewalk parking, perceived property rights and a system too over burdened with some of New Bedford's hard core problems to pay much attention. The story is important, but it isn't a story where the edges are fuzzy. All the players know the problem, all the players know what is supposed to happen, but for seven plus years, the desire to get the fix done has been non existent. This story is a small piece of a much larger story of many problems to be found down in the little section of New Bedford's south end known as the Patrick Sweeny development. Most people who travel through this area use Padanaram Ave as a shortcut to Bliss corner near Sunshine Bakery on Dartmouth Street. With the exception of the many “lead footed” drivers, it's all vary pastoral and quiet.

NEW YORK TIMES
- Long before Ahab set out after Moby Dick, Americans pursued the whale. And long after Ishmael survived the wreck of the Pequod, they chased and hunted as far afield as the Arctic Ocean as the whales became fewer. Changing fashions and the discovery of petroleum doomed the industry to obsolescence, but the knights-errant of the high seas pushed ever onward, anachronisms from the age of sail surviving into the machine age.
