NEW BEDFORD, MA - OPINION — Last night's debate between Vice presidential candidates was for lack of another term, a breath of fresh air. These two folks carried themselves with professionalism and dignity. Ms. Palin obviously upset the Obama faithful with her near perfect performance. Mr. Biden upset the republican faithful by not stumbling over his words as is characteristic. Both candidates presented themselves in a way that politicians should do so regularly. There were no personal attacks or hard core partisan nonsense. There was plenty of discussion and differences of opinion delivered in a respectful and thoughtful way. Amen.

All too often, politics degenerates into one moron vs. another moron which carries over into everyday conversation. People do things and make statements not because of any factual truths, but because that is what other similar politically addicted neighbors want to hear. Intelligence and accuracy in political discussions usually not only takes the back seat, but is escorted out the back door. What we are left with is usually “deer in the headlights loony Democrats” and “$1,000 dollar suit Republicans” who would just as soon toss grandma on the street to build yet another useless condo development. Regardless of the accuracy of the minutia of last nights talking points, the debate was a plus for American politics. Hopefully both sides were paying attention.
Of course the question we all have to ask ourselves is, did last night's debate deliver any earth shattering information that will make fence sitters fall one way or the other. I don't think so. What was accomplished is Joe Biden reasserted his ability to carry on an intelligent conversation which has served him well during his time in elected office. Sarah Palin proved she is a quick student and can hold her own against a 30 year veteran. Barak Obama, similarly hobbled by the experience question, too held his own against John McCain. This folks is what we call a horse race and it will go down to the wire regardless of what the extreme left or right babble in our direction. The question of change is heavy in this years election. Last night's debate made clear that Joe Biden easily represent the same old and Ms. Palin is definitely a change in Washington. Her speaking ability and style screams and flashes change in all directions. Both candidates have good hearts and sharp minds. A voter has to sort through their party affiliation, personal feelings and speck of intellect to determine for themselves a winner of last night impressive display of professionalism in politics.Only registered users can write comments.
