Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.
George Washington
NEW BEDFORD, MA - Opinion - Congratulations to President Elect Barack Obama is a common sentiment espoused by many in the media or amongst polite company, even those with a right wing lean. However, is this genuine rhetoric, or are such conciliatory statements simply gratuitous. Any man (or woman) of worth or value, relishes his or her opinion and rightly should not be easily dislodged without worthy contestation. A contest of wits that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that one's opinion should be changed or modified. The argument that everyone else is doing it, is an argument for the feeble minded or children. As such I cannot bring myself to wish Barack Obama a good presidency or even wish him luck. I have little faith in human nature and I have less faith in those who would distort or modify under the microscope of criticism.

For more than one year, even right up to the threshold of election night, much information was uncovered about Mr. Obama that gives an intelligent thinking person reason to pause; particularly any person who finds the United States Constitution a document that should not be tinkered with or subject to wide opinion. Mr. Obama's view on the Constitution is unfortunately fuzzy, yielding to ideas that are intrinsically interesting. On more than one occasion, Mr. Obama has referred to the United States Constitution as flawed, sometimes clarifying his opinion and other times not. On a more local issue regarding our building inspector Dan Romanowicz, who is being allowed to operate as New Bedford's building commissioner without proper state licensing by Mayor Lang. Even though state law is clear in regards to what municipalities are supposed to do when faced with the loss of a properly licensed commissioner. Mayor Lang feels he can legitimately skirt the law by creating the position of “Acting” Building Commissioner. Since the state law does not specifically define nor prohibit this, he feels he is justified. The state seems to agree, however such shenanigans violates the greater morality and spirit of the law. Barack Obama may do the same during his tenure has president; to what end or result is as yet unknown. But the simple idea that he is thinking that our basic tool of law is flawed, is not an idea to which I wish to subscribe.
George Washington, our fist president is credited with a quote “Associate with men of good quality” … '”for it is better to be alone than in bad company.” On this, Barack Obama fails miserably. Granted he has a good excuse for all; from simple associations to mere acquaintances. The greater issue is the regularity Mr. Obama found these people to be in the same room as he. The fact that this thought had little effect on the people who supported Mr. Obama is the fact that these people agree with the likes of Ayres and Rev. Wright that America has become a bad place and these men of ill repute were only trying to point this out. During the election season, I never once heard Barack Obama take account for these associations nor reject them. I heard excuses and diminishments. The honorable man would have acknowledged these issues and either defended them or rejected them as mistakes of early judgment. He did neither, as such, I do not trust his judgment to surround himself with people of quality to hadle the affairs of state. We shall see soon enough.
Bottom line, without belaboring the point, Barack Obama is still a man of mystery. His popularity has less to do with the wide eyed reverence of his most entranced fans and more to do with the fact that George Bush's term(s) were less than spectacular for the average citizen. Mr. Obama has set his bar high, so high only the most stoned could possibly reach it. This of course was made more easily attainable by Massachusett's huge cadre of former hippies trying to relive the drug induced happy days of their youth --- legally. Breath deep folks, I hope Mr. Obama becomes the president you seem to know he will be. But, having little faith in human nature, I expect him to crash and burn like Herbert Hoover. However, America will probably prevail and Mr Obama will take his place in history, good or bad.Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. Powered by AkoComment! |
