City officials appear to be kicking back against activists in attempt to silence them Print E-mail

NEW BEDFORD, MA - OPINION; The freshest water if left alone will eventually become undrinkable. For three years Scott Lang has been left alone for the most part to prove that he is the Mayor he promised he could be . HE, or as HE sold it, WE would get together and make New Bedford a great place. Things starched well with the Great Ideas Forums. For almost two years, we activists, the general citizenship and the paid media gave Mayor Lang all the rope he needed. With the beginning of year three, it was becoming increasingly clear that Mayor Lang's great ideas did not mesh with the citizen's great ideas. A schism was developing. The excuse that “the former” administration did it, can no longer be used as a “good” excuse. He may have started “it”, but Mayor Lang has allowed “it” to fester and grow.

We all understand that Mayor Lang inherited a local government top heavy with the spoils of corruption and political hacks. We all expected that this culture of protecting the inept and unresponsive crony government would at least slow. It has not in my humble opinion. Not only has Mayor Lang not changed the insider game, he has only made it more effective. There has been a concerted effort to discredit, intimidate and marginalize the activist groups and individuals within the city. Too much credible evidence has surfaced, from the waterfront of Padanaram Ave to the upper reaches of Colby Village and Pulaski School that clearly demonstrates what the city says and what the city does are two completely different animals.

Most recently, popular morning talk host Evan Rousseau was let go from is position at WBSM in Fairhaven. Although it can't be directly proven, the rumor mill puts the fault squarely on the shoulders of the Mayor and the back door game that may be played with the paid media. We have seen this before. Two other popular talk show hosts in the recent past were also booted from the airwaves when they too became in possession of clear and irrefutable proof of local governmental corruption. The similarities are too similar to grant to simple chance.

Evan's undoing may have it roots in his honorable and passionate support for his friend Brian Wooley. Mr. Wooley, Mr. Rousseau, Mr. Johnson and others have been fighting for a cleaner environment for New Bedford high students and have been fighting an uphill battle regarding the unfortunate building of a Jr. High on a toxic waste dump. At a recent meeting of the New Bedford School committee, tempers flared and voices were raised. Video recordings made by a local citizen clearly demonstrated the contempt some elected officials had for the Wasted Away cause. Committee member Tom Clark, who's hair cut resembles that Forrest Gump, was filmed laughing at a speaker and made unwarranted and threating remarks toward the people he works for. So far, no official has stood up for the kids and six years on, our children still occupy two schools that have health issues that are questionable.

The activists at this juncture have two choices. Consider ourselves beaten and watch Oprah; or regroup and take back our government from the people we put there to serve. Time to get a good pair of shoes and start the public protests.

Round 1: Keith Jr. High, Monday @ 6.

IMPORTANT!

We've had enough of the lack of action on Dr. Sorrentino's situation.
therefore:

PICKET Monday night before the School Committee meeting.

Please meet in front of Keith at 6:pm, bring signs in support and lots
and lots of people. We'll quit at 7: so anyone who wants to attend the meeting
will be able to.

We will obey the law, not hassle anybody, etc. since we are not looking
for trouble -we only want to call attention to her plight.

Anyone with questions, please call me" (508)991-2598.

Thank you so much for your support!

Irene
