Americans stand at career center in the cold, illegals go to work; what's up with that? |

 NEW BEDFORD, MA - OPINION — It's been quite awhile since I have posted any articles on WCI and there are several reasons for this, mostly having to do with burnout, but today I witnessed something that reached down into my gut and encouraged me to dust off my keyboard and commit the sin of repeating myself.

This holiday season was a tough one from one ocean to the other. I don't think it important to recant all the economic horror stories that have plastered the news, nor do I have to repeat all the left wing loon slobbering distractions related to our next president. Because in New Bedford, most people did not do business with crooked Wall Street financier Jerry Madoff, most people were not invested in Lehman Brothers, most people don't have a troubled mortgage and most people don't own a 401K and most don't own any stock. Most people in New Bedford are simply worried whether or not they will have a job to go to tomorrow and the numbers who don't has increased to such levels, the unemployment system is swamped and there are excessively long lines at the career center.
It's those lines at the career center that interest me most. At 8:15 this morning, the line was already out the door and curving down the sidewalk. I slowed to have a look at the faces of these hard luck but willing to work American citizens. The temperature was not comfortable at around 25 measly degrees. Once inside, the process is less than enjoyable. A human necessity to keep life in each of their homes puttering along the best they can. I sympathize as I sometimes even find it difficult to afford the $9.95 it takes to keep whalingcity.info up and running.
On Herman Melville Boulevard, named after a man worshiped by those who rarely have to wonder where their next meal is coming from was occurring a daily ritual. Right past the Career Center, right past the Ferry Parking lot, right past state peir, right past Mayor Lang's plastic fork future motel, right past the Nstar facility was a steady stream of... (do I dare say it) … illegal immigrants pedaling and walking to their jobs at the fish plants. As I sipped my coffee, I wondered at the hypocrisy of it all. Legal Americans go starving for a job and must stand in the cold as people who do not even have the legal right to be employed here are happily finding their way to job on our waterfront.
Blowing the steam off my coffee, I wondered just how we got to the point that illegal people are worth more than real United States citizens. Barney Frank, John Kerry, Mark Montigney, our own Mayor Lang have all openly and happily supported the illegals... (e hem undocumented workers) … as necessary to the American economy. The unfortunate truth is that many of those people standing in the cold at the unemployment office begging for a job, unable to find one because the illegals already have them, probably were the same people who voted the above politicians back into office. I wonder what the illegals are thinking as they pedal and walk past a line of 200 New Bedford citizens standing in the cold wondering if they can afford a gallon of milk for their kids this week?
Knowing New Bedford as I do, most of those people in the line at the career center are thinking more about the gallon of milk and less about the illegals peddling past. An irony lost on most. All this as Mayor Lang posed with his left wing loon friends at the New York Times talking about Herman Melville and his new plastic fork hotel. Without too mch effort, one can tell which issue is more important to our well spoken Mayor. Bless the modern coffee cup for it's ability to keep coffee warm longer than ever... and probably made by an illegal. Americans have become nothing more than sheep to our legislatures.
